As you prepare for your next conference (perhaps SXSW, TED or DEMO) , there are a number of things you will need to organise. You will need to tick all of the usual boxes such as ordering equipment like fold out tables, branded freebies that you can give away, and your trade show banner, but be careful not to forget the really important stuff. Here’s the Beyond MVP team’s survival kit for any conference:
A confab comes with a lot of socializing and entertaining, most of which occurs after hours. If you’ve overindulged (easy to do at afterparties), you will be thankful to have that ibuprofen the next day. Some members of the Beyond MVP team swear by taking two before going to bed. You could also try this nifty hangover pack for the morning after.
2. Extra Shirt/Pair of Pants.
Coffee the next morning is great, but not if you’re wearing it. While you’re packing the stain remover (and yes, you’ll need that too) you might as well throw in an extra set of clothes, just in case.
3. Comfortable Shoes.
Standing and moving around all day can take its toll, and it’s hard to keep smiling when your feet hurt. So, ladies: don’t torture yourself with stilettos. Try a well-fitted shoe with a low heel or some trendy flats instead. Gents: Stay away from brand new shoes, unless you plan on breaking them in ahead of time. Your feet will thank you for it.
Especially handy if you ignore item No. 3 on our list. Also handy for the unforeseen paper cuts and other random injuries that will inevitably appear when you least expect them.
5. Hand Sanitizer or Wipes.
Shaking hands and meeting lots of people is fun, but unless you’re Howie Mandel and can get away with a fist bump, it can get pretty gross after a while. It’s amazing how many people don’t wash their hands, so packing some Hand Sanitizer can help keep you clean.
6. Plenty of Water.
7. Breath Mints.
You don’t have to have halitosis to benefit from the humble mint. Look at what it’s done for all those couples in the Ice Breakers commercials.
8. Extra Batteries and an Extension Cord.
You will do your CFO proud when you don’t have to rent an extra power strip for the cost of a restaurant meal for two.
Pack some granola bars or dried fruit to help you through the late afternoon hours.
Conferences can be chaotic events and your level of preparedness can make or break your success. Having these items within reach will allow you to focus all your energy on making the sales and connections that make a truly successful conference experience.
