The Pen tool is, without a doubt, one of Adobe Creative Suite’s most versatile tools: it’s not only great for drawing, but also for creating complex fill zones and tracing and outlining objects. Those familiar with the Pen tool also know that it’s notoriously hard to learn.
As is the case with most skills, the Pen tool can be tamed with a little practice and a lot of patience. If you’re not a big fan of the “push all the buttons and see what happens” methond, you could take advantage of one of the many tutorials and how-to guides that abound online.
But just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Frankly, reading from a guide is a little bit boring, even if it does manage to be informative. And given the hands-on nature of graphic design, shouldn’t there be a more creative solution out there?
Enter the The Bézier Game, a interactive learning game that might just be one of the coolest things ever. Named for the parametric curve frequently used in computer graphics and other fields, The Bézier Game takes players on a creative journey through the ins and outs of the Pen tool and its many shortcuts.
The game starts you off with basic shapes before advancing into more complex territory: the art of perfect circles, sexy curves, shimmering waves and a variety of time-saving keyboard commands. That’s not to say this is an easy game, but if you’ve gotten this far in your design career without being able to draw a proper curve, it’s probably a more attractive option than rage-quitting in the middle of the workday.
Old pros and wannabes looking for a challenge will have fun here too: there’s really something for everyone. And once you’ve conquered curves, check out Method of Action’s other games on color theory and typography. You might even like Method Draw, their free open source vector editor. Good luck, and happy drawing!
