SonoFAST is one of eight startups to emerge from Georgia Tech’s Startup Summer program. The medical device company was incorporated in October 2014 and has since expanded to five members from its original four. As the team works toward gaining FDA clearance for its ultrasound imaging product, the recent graduates shared their experiences so far.
BeyondMVP:What was the inspiration behind SonoFAST?
SonoFAST: While in still school, two members from the team worked in a few of the Emergency Departments in metro Atlanta. During shift hours, one of the members noticed that ultrasound probes were often left uncleaned after exams due to the fast-paced environment.
After more than 100 hours of clinical observations by team members after this initial observation, a deeper and [more] profound need emerged. We all love the medical industry, and knowing that one day our product can enhance the customer experience keeps us moving forward every day.
BeyondMVP: Was it difficult to balance coursework with starting a business? What Were the sacrifices you and the team had to make in order to accomplish your goals?
SF: We started SonoFAST during our last semester at Georgia Tech and it was part of our senior design class. We decided to continue pursuing the entrepreneurship space upon graduation. Currently there are members on the team that juggle a full-time corporate job and the startup life. Even though this can be challenging, it is a reality for those of us in the startup space.
BMVP: How did your friends and relatives respond to the news that you would be going into the world of startups after graduation?
SF: You know you are on to something when everyone is so encouraging. Our families are very supportive. They voice concerns and encourage us when we need it. Our friends are waiting until they can work for us one day!
